Women's Volleyball Falls to IUPUI 3-1

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Despite Katie Crowe's 21 kills, Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball fell to IUPUI 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 27-25, 25-23) on Tuesday night (Sept. 10) on Arnie Ball Court. Sandra Hoevels tied her career-high with nine blocks.
The Mastodons jumped out to a 12-6 lead to start the match, but IUPUI went on an 11-2 run. The 'Dons responded with four straight, but the Jaguars had two three-point runs that put the first away. Crowe had six kills in the set.
In the second, the 'Dons and Jags traded points until 8-all, then Purdue Fort Wayne went on a 9-4 run. Crowe had an ace in this run. Purdue Fort Wayne led 23-17 toward the end of the frame, and got the last two points to go with a kill from Madelyn Wurster and a block by Hoevels and Elizabeth Fuerst. The Mastodons hit .500 in the second set.
The extended third set was back and forth until a three-point Mastodon run that forced an IUPUI timeout at 17-13. The 'Dons had a pair of set point opportunities at 24-22 and 24-23, but the Jaguars took the last two points of the set in the end. Rebecca Schlechte had a tricky float serve that earned an ace for the Jaguars.
IUPUI took a 5-0 lead to start the second set, but Purdue Fort Wayne clawed back to tie it at 11. The Jags led later on at 21-19 before a four-point swing for the Mastodons, in which Crowe had an ace. Even though Purdue Fort Wayne led 23-21, the Jaguars took a four-point run off the court.
Crowe tallied a double-double with the match-high 21 kills and 14 digs. Madison Gates also recorded a double-double with 21 assists and 10 digs. Rachael Crucis led the back line with 15 digs.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 2-5, while IUPUI improves to 2-4. The Mastodons are back in action on Friday (Sept. 13) at 7 p.m. ET at Evansville's Dunn Hospitality Tournament. The 'Dons face off against the Purple Aces, followed by Eastern Illinois and Middle Tennessee on Saturday.
