Each week Winning Wednesday we take a look back at some memorable wins for the 'Dons.
October 21, 2011 - Women's Soccer - Mastodons Kick Past Southern Utah 2-1
Original Recap
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - IPFW junior Danielle Bishop led the Mastodons past the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, 2-1, off of a penalty kick as clock wound down in overtime on Friday evening in Fort Wayne, Ind. at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
With the win, the Mastodons move to 5-9-0 and 2-4-0 in Summit League play while the Thunderbirds fall to 2-10-3 and 0-5-0 in the league.
In a first half that was mostly controlled by the visitors, it did not take long for the Thunderbirds to make their mark. At the 5:21 mark, SUU's Riley Bassett had a pass to Missy Lazcano, who then had an 18-yard shot to the far post for the early 1-0 lead.
The Thunderbirds carried the 1-0 lead into the locker rooms despite having a chance to get on the board again with six minutes left in the first half in three close back-to-back shots.
In a second half that saw many scoring opportunities for the Mastodons, at the 76:58 mark they knotted up the score at 1-1. Off of a corner kick from junior Tylar Allison, freshman Amber Lawrence had her first collegiate goal and the 'Dons first goal of the match.
It looked like the Thunderbirds were going to prevent an overtime after they scored in the last 36 seconds of the second half, however, the goal was called back due to offsides and the two teams headed into overtime.
With the clock winding down, SUU goalie Breana Fitzgerald had a handball in the box forcing a penalty kick by Bishop for the Mastodon 2-1 victory in the last minute of overtime.
Freshman Krysta Hedrick tallied five saves for the Mastodons while SUU's Fitzgerald also had five saves.
IPFW outshot SUU, 18-17, and led in corner kicks, 6-2. The Thunderbirds had nine fouls while the Mastodons had seven.
Junior Arianne Mason had four shots, with one on goal, for the 'Dons while junior Alaina Jones had three. Including the game-winning goal, Bishop recorded three shots with two on goal.
