Mastodons Beat Northern Illinois and Illinois State for Fifth at Mid-American Match Play

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. - On the second day of the Mid-American Match Play Challenge, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's golf team beat second-seeded Northern Illinois 3-2 and Illinois State 3-2. With the wins on Tuesday (Feb. 4), Purdue Fort Wayne finished fifth of 11 teams.
Kennedy Brooker got the first win of the day for the Mastodons, beating Isabella Samudio 3 and 2. Brooker took a lead on the first hole, and never let her foe tie it up. She led by as many as three before she made the turn, and finished the morning by taking hole six and splitting seven. Holly Anderson beat Jasmine Ly 2-up, coming back from down one on two different occasions. Anderson trailed by one on the 11th hole of the day, and took two straight to never trail again. Laura Caetano defeated Lauren Ingle 1-up. Caetano never gave up her lead on the front nine after taking the lead on hole one.
Linnzie Richner fell 5 and 3 to Caroline Klemp and Emma Schroeder dropped her match 1-down to Ahra Ko. Both Northern Illinois opponents led wire-to-wire.
Brooker and Anderson carded their wins over Illinois State first. Brooker beat Morgan Savage 4 and 3, and Anderson beat Paige Seiser 5 and 4. Brooker led wire-to-wire after taking the lead on the first hole of the afternoon. Anderson took a lead on the first hole, but went back and forth until hole five, when she took the lead for good. Schroeder solidified the win by finishing 2-up over Emma Sutton. Schroeder had a lead the entire back nine, and put the icing on the round with a birdie on 18 to go 2-up.
Richner fell to Becca Black 4 and 2, while Caetano dropped her match against Emma Rouger 2 and 1.
The Mastodons will be back in action on Monday, March 9 when they head to Florida again for the Benbow Collegiate. The event is hosted by Butler in Jacksonville, Florida.
