Four 'Dons Score in Double-Figures in Loss at Denver
2/8/2020 5:25:00 PM | Women's Basketball
DENVER - Despite four Mastodons scoring in double-figures on Saturday (Feb. 8), Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball dropped a Summit League contest at Denver 83-57 in the Hamilton Gym.
Sh'Toya Sanders recorded her third-straight double-double, recording 11 points and 10 rebounds. Anna Lappenküper played all 40 minutes of the contest, and led the team in scoring. She netted 18 points on 6 of 11 shooting, 4 of 5 from behind the arc. At halftime, she was 5 of 6 from the floor and 3 of 3 from deep.
Riley Ott and Hannah Hess were the other two 'Dons to reach 10 points, as Ott scored 15 and Hess had 10. Ott increased her season average up to 11.9, which leads all freshmen in the Division I era of Mastodon women's basketball.
The Mastodons went on a 6-0 run toward the end of the second quarter, which was their best of the afternoon. Sanders hit two layups and Lappenküper made two free throws. The latter of Sanders' layups was after one of the team's 16 offensive rebounds that she put back up and in. Denver ended the run by hitting a 3-pointer as the clock expired. This gave Denver a 41-34 lead heading into halftime.
Denver's offense kept going in the second half, as the Pioneers out-scored the 'Dons 21-9 in the third quarter. This was ultimately the difference in the game. The Pioneers were led by Madison Nelson, who finished with 25 points, 13 rebounds and five assists.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 5-19, 1-10 Summit League while Denver improves to 10-14, 4-7. The Mastodons will continue their three-game road stretch with games at North Dakota State (Thursday, Feb. 13) and South Dakota State (Saturday, Feb. 15).
