3/10/2020 12:04:00 AM | Men's Basketball
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - No. 7 Purdue Fort Wayne men's basketball's time in the Summit League is over, as the Mastodons fell to No. 6 North Dakota on Monday night (March 9) 73-56 in the Summit League Championship semifinal.
Matt Holba picked up where he left off in the Summit League quarterfinal, as he recorded 17 points to lead Purdue Fort Wayne in the scoring column. The difference in the game, however, came from behind the 3-point arc, as North Dakota drained 11 of its 24 attempts, while the Mastodons went 6 for 31.
Holba had a 7-0 run on his own in the second half that brought Purdue Fort Wayne within six at 44-38 with 12:04 left. This included a pair of made 3-pointers and a free throw. North Dakota responded with a 7-0 run of its own to keep the Mastodons at arm's length. The 'Dons had a 6-2 stretch later on, but North Dakota still led by 11. Deonte Billups drained a pull-up jumper, Jarred Godfrey knocked in a pair of free throws and DeMierre Black scored on a running floater in the paint in the push. The Mastodons held the Fighting Hawks without a field goal over the last 3:35.
The first half was also one of runs, as North Dakota had an 11-2 run early on that Purdue Fort Wayne answered with a 5-2 push. Black and Godfrey each had a bucket in this stretch, with Godfrey's coming off his own steal with which he went coast-to-coast. The 'Dons had a 14-3 run over a 7:35 stretch near the end of the first half, which featured two dunks and a layup from Dylan Carl, a driving layup from Holba, a trey from Marcus DeBerry and a mid-range jumper from Black.
North Dakota had four players in double-figures. The Mastodons had just seven turnovers, which was the second-fewest this season. Purdue Fort Wayne had 12 offensive rebounds and 10 steals, compared to North Dakota's three in each category.
Godfrey finished with 13 points, with seven coming on seven free throw attempts. Carl had 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting and six rebounds.
Purdue Fort Wayne's record moves to 14-19, while North Dakota improves to 15-17 and will face top-seeded North Dakota State in the Summit League Championship final.
