FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne student-athletes Valerie Clark and Jon Diedrich recently participated in the Great American Cleanup, lending a hand to keeping the city of Fort Wayne clean.
Clark and Diedrich are members of the Purdue Fort Wayne Accounting Society, which offered to its members the opportunity to participate in the cleanup in conjunction with the city of Fort Wayne.
"I think it was really cool to be able to give back to a community that has given me so much," Clark said. "I've really enjoyed Fort Wayne in the time that I've been here, and it was nice to get out, meet people and have fun picking up trash for a few hours to give back."
Fort Wayne has participated in the Great American Cleanup for over 20 years. It is an initiative through Keep America Beautiful to organize community cleanups across the country. Fort Wayne's participation in the event draws in hundreds of locals to keep the Summit City clean. Clark and Diedrich cleaned up downtown, including around the Allen County Courthouse.
"The community has done so much for me so far and keeping our community clean in this time is great," Diedrich said. "It just feels really good to give back."
Clark is on the women's basketball team and is set for her first season of competition in 2020-21 after sitting out the 2019-20 season to satisfy transfer rules. Diedrich is on the men's volleyball team, and had a standout freshman season in 2020 as an opposite.
