Katie Crowe Earns 36th Double-Double in Horizon League Opener
1/25/2021 9:40:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
CHICAGO - In Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball's Horizon League debut, Katie Crowe recorded her 36th career double-double, but the Mastodons fell to UIC 3-1 (25-20, 25-15, 23-25, 25-21) in the Flames Athletic Center.
Crowe ended her night with 15 kills and 14 digs, leading the Mastodons in the offensive category. She was second on the team in digs to Rachael Crucis, who had 15.
UIC led the opening set wire-to-wire and led by as many as 11 at 20-9. After this point, Purdue Fort Wayne went on an 8-1 run led by Sidney Schiller. She had two kills and an ace in that stretch. Closing the gap to three was as close as Purdue Fort Wayne would get, however. Crowe had two kills near the end, but UIC took the final two points of the set.
Maggie Castleman entered the fray in the second set and quickly set a spark on the Purdue Fort Wayne attack in her collegiate debut. She had two kills later on in the second set, then kept going in the third, registering five. She went on to finish with nine, tied for third-most on the team with a .368 hitting percentage, which was second to just Madelyn Wurster.
Wurster did most of her damage in the third set, when she had five kills, two of which came near the end of the frame. The 'Dons used a mini-run from Wurster and Crowe to go up 21-15, which was enough cushion to extend the match. Castleman and Crowe capped it off with a pair of kills.
After UIC built an early lead in the fourth set, it was a back-and-forth set the rest of the way. The 'Dons could not get a run any larger than two in a row going, but held UIC to the same scoring pattern. Sydney Boerst cut the UIC lead to 24-21 with a block and kill to stave off two set points, but the Flames got a kill to end the 'Dons' chance to force a fifth.
Schiller flirted with a double-double, recording nine kills and nine digs. Castleman paired her nine kills with six digs.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 0-1 in the 2020-21 season while UIC improves to 1-0. These two teams will meet again tomorrow with a 5 p.m. ET first serve in Chicago.
