1/26/2021 7:16:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
CHICAGO - Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball dropped its rematch with UIC on Tuesday (Jan. 26), as the Mastodons fell 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-17) at the Flames Athletic Center.
The second match of the week against the Flames featured a better performance from the Mastodons in the first set. The 'Dons got a lead early at 11-8, and after trading some points with the Flames, they led 19-18 as well. Ramei Jackson and Katie Crowe combined for a block to cap off a 3-0 push that gave the 'Dons that lead. After UIC called timeout, the Flames went on a 4-0 run of their own to lead 22-19. This lead would hold, as the Flames took the opening set.
Purdue Fort Wayne started the second on the right foot, going up 4-1 with early kills from Jackson and Maggie Castleman. After overcoming a 6-0 UIC run, the 'Dons went on an 11-5 stretch to lead 19-15. Like they did all night, however, the Flames responded with a 9-1 run. Crowe had back-to-back kills to keep it at set point for UIC, but the Flames got a kill from Paola Santiago to go up 2-0.
The Mastodons held close with the Flames early on in the third set, trading mini-runs until a 16-15 UIC lead. Midway through, the 'Dons had a 4-0 segment that featured three straight kills from Sydney Boerst and one from Crowe. The Flames used a 9-2 run from this point to end the match early.
Boerst and Crowe led offensively for Purdue Fort Wayne, both with eight kills. Boerst had a .438 hitting clip. Defensively, the 'Dons were paced by Rachael Crucis, who had 16 digs to lead the match. Castleman paired her five kills with 11 digs, while Crowe had eight digs. Jackson finished the match with four blocks.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 0-2 in the Horizon League while UIC improves to 2-0. The Mastodons will be back in action next week to play in their home opener against Youngstown State, which was picked 11th in the Horizon League Preseason Poll.
