Mastodons Go Five Sets With UIC
10/24/2021 5:52:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
CHICAGO - Despite pushing UIC to a decisive fifth set, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team fell to the Flames 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 23-25, 25-15, 15-4) in the Flames Athletic Center.
Offense was the difference in Sunday's (Oct. 24) contest. The Mastodons hit over .300 in the sets they won, while the Flames did the same. UIC had only one set that was under .300 all afternoon, however; the Flames hit .278 in the third.
The Mastodons looked their best in sets two and three, hitting .481 and .379, respectively. This was in large part due to Katie Crowe, who had 10 kills on 17 attempts in those two sets. She finished with 15 kills on 37 swings for a .324 percentage. Molly Mirabelli was perfect in those two sets, finding four kills on four attacks.
In the second set, the Mastodons overcame a 5-0 UIC run that put the Flames up four by taking eight of the last 12 points of the set. Nicole Jones capped off the frame by hammering down an overpass for one of her four kills. UIC had a similar 5-0 run in set three, but the 'Dons went to their All-American in Crowe, who got three kills in a row to start a 9-2 stretch. UIC went up 23-22, but the 'Dons got a kill from Madelyn Wurster, forced an attack error, then Ramei Jackson blocked the Flames to go up 2-1.
From this point on, it was all UIC, as the Flames out-scored the Mastodons 40-19 in the last two sets.
Crowe finished with a team-high 15 kills, and now has 1,530 for her career, the fifth-most in program history. Wurster, Mirabelli and Jackson had four blocks each. UIC was led by the two-headed dragon of Paola Santiago and Martina Delucchi, who had 26 and 24 kills, respectively.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 6-20 and 4-9 in Horizon League play. UIC goes to 12-10, 8-2. The Mastodons will return home for their next five matches to close the season. Friday and Saturday (Oct. 29-30) will open the homestand with Robert Morris and Youngstown State.
