Mastodon WBB Opens Horizon League Play on Thursday With UIC

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team will return to the Gates Sports Center on Thursday (Nov. 18) to open Horizon League action with the UIC Flames.

Know Your Foe
UIC is 0-1 on the young season, having only played a regular season game at Big Ten foe Northwestern. The Flames also played an exhibition game against Benedictine, which UIC won 77-67. In the Flames' game at Northwestern, Jaida McCloud scored a team-high 14 points with eight coming at the free throw line.

UIC leads the all-time series 4-2, but the Mastodons took the last game in 2019. The 'Dons got 15 points from Riley Ott and also held UIC without a field goal for the first 15:06. This will be the first meeting between the two since becoming Horizon League foes.

In her first game as a Mastodon, Detroit Mercy transfer Sylare Starks had a career-high 21 points against Manchester in the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The Fort Wayne native spent was 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) from the floor and 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) from 3-point range.
Horizon League, Meet Ryin Ott
After a 16-point performance in her first-career game with Purdue Fort Wayne, Ryin Ott was named as the Horizon League Freshman of the Week. She also recorded six rebounds, three steals and three assists without a turnover. Ott is the first Mastodon in program history to receive the honor.

Purdue Fort Wayne has two former conference Coach of the Year award winners on its coaching staff: Maria Marchesano and Lauren Macer. Marchesano was the Northeast Conference Coach of the Year in 2021 while at Mount St. Mary's and Division II Independent Coach of the Year in 2012 while at Urbana. Macer was the 2020 Mountain East Conference Coach of the Year after leading Notre Dame College to regular season and tournament championships.
