Purdue Fort Wayne Falls to Wright State 3-0
11/5/2021 8:35:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Madison Gates recorded a 30-assist, 15-dig double-double in Friday's (Nov. 5) match against the Wright State Raiders, but the Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team fell 3-0 (29-27, 25-18, 25-19) in the Gates Sports Center.
The Mastodons had 75 digs in the three-set affair, the most in a three-setter since 2007, a 78-dig effort against Kansas City.
The opening set was as competitive of a set as the Mastodons have played in all season, as it extended to feature 56 points. After Wright State led 20-19, Purdue Fort Wayne called timeout, then rattled off a 5-0 run that saw three 'Dons get kills and Sidney Schiller get a block. Wright State evened the set with four-straight points, then took the final three points of the frame. All told, the Raiders evaded seven set points. Rachael Crucis had nine digs in the first set alone.
Crucis' defensive efforts continued in the second set, as she had nine more in the 25-18 second. Wright State got out to a 13-5 lead, but the Mastodons stormed back with a 6-0 run that included an ace from Schiller. Wright State got another run to go its way to go up 21-13, which ultimately was enough to take a 2-0 lead.
Purdue Fort Wayne jumped out to a 10-5 lead in set three, which was capped off by an emphatic block from Madelyn Wurster and Ramei Jackson. The 'Dons led at 16-12, but the Raiders went on a 10-0 run to run away with the match.
Katie Crowe, Schiller and Wurster all had 10 kills. Crucis finished with 21 digs, her second-best of the season. Gates, Crowe and Wurster also reached double-digit digs. Wright State was led by 14 kills from Fort Wayne native Nyssa Baker.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 7-22, 5-11 Horizon League. Wright State improves to 19-7, 11-3, officially clinching a berth to the Horizon League Championship. The Mastodons will be back in action on Saturday (Nov. 6) at 4 p.m. on the Arnie Ball Court when Northern Kentucky comes to town. The Norse are coming off a 3-1 win at IUPUI.
