FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Madelyn Wurster recorded a career-high 23 kills, but it wasn't enough to take down first-place Northern Kentucky. The long-time rival defeated the Mastodons 3-2 (26-24,16-25, 21-25, 25-17, 15-9) on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 6) in Horizon League women's volleyball play.
Wurster finished with a line of 23-6-51 for a .333 attack percentage. She was one of three Mastodons with double-digit kills. Katie Crowe had 12 kills to go along with 17 digs for her 14th double-double of the season. Ramei Jackson totaled 10 kills.
Madison Gates had 42 assists and a team-high 21 digs for her second double-double in as many matches.
The opening set featured 13 ties and seven lead changes. While it didn't go in the Mastodons' column, the 'Dons turned away two NKU set points. It set the tone for what would end up being the Mastodons' eighth five-set contest of the season.
The 'Dons evened the match in the second, out-hitting the Norse .345 to .000 in the frame. NKU had only six kills in the set.
The third saw the 'Dons go up 2-1 after winning the set by four points. The score was tied at 11 when the 'Dons took the lead for good with five straight points. Alexandra Traciak had an ace for point 16.
NKU took sets four and five to take the match by limiting the Mastodons to sub-.100 hitting in each of the final two frames. Anna Brinkmann and Reilly Briggs each had 16 kills for the Norse. Anna Burke recorded 22 digs.
