12/5/2021 4:31:00 PM | Women's Basketball
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - After erasing a 10-point deficit, Purdue Fort Wayne led at Northern Kentucky by one with less than two minutes left, but the Norse took a 69-60 decision from the Mastodons for a home win on Sunday (Dec. 5).
From the 5:00 mark to the 2:17 mark in the third quarter, the Mastodons held NKU scoreless while going on a 6-0 run of their own to take a late lead. Riley Ott knocked in two 3-pointers, including a banked in trey off a feed from Jazzlyn Linbo. This put the Mastodons up 60-58, a lead which held until NKU's Emmy Souder dropped a pair of free throws with 1:37 left. This was the start of the 11-0 closing stretch that NKU used to sneak by the Mastodons.
Purdue Fort Wayne trailed 50-40 midway through the third quarter before a furious comeback led by Sylare Starks and Ott. The two combined for 16 points in a 20-8 stretch from 5:49 left in the third to 2:37 left in the game, a 13:31 spell. Starks hit two 3-pointers in the final minute of the third quarter, including one to beat the buzzer.
There was a lot to like from the Mastodons in the first 11:10 of the game, as they built up an 11-point lead to start the contest. Shayla Sellers went on a 10-0 run over her own midway through the first quarter, burying two triples and a driving layup in a 1:02 stretch. To open the second quarter, Riley Ott drained a triple before her sister Ryin Ott knocked in a step-back.
The Mastodons finished the game shooting 34.6 percent from 3-point land. This was thanks to Riley Ott and Starks, who combined for 7-of-15. Aubrey Stupp and Linbo did the majority of the rebounding work for the 'Dons, with eight and seven, respectively in less than 23 minutes of work each.
Riley Ott led the 'Dons with 17 points, while Starks had 16. Sellers had 12, all in the first half. Purdue Fort Wayne had 17 second chance points off eight offensive rebounds.
NKU was led by Lindsey Duvall, who went off for 26 points.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 4-4, 3-1 Horizon League while NKU improves to 5-3, 2-2. The Mastodons will take the court again on Thursday (Dec. 9) when they visit a 3-6 Southeast Missouri squad.
