Know Your Foe
Robert Morris is 3-11 in Horizon League play and will come into the Gates Sports Center on a three-game losing streak. The Colonials' three wins came against Wright State (2) and Youngstown State. RMU does not have a player that averages more than 10 points per game, but have five that average more than five. Sol Castro is the team leader with 9.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
Think Pink
Friday's game with Robert Morris will be the women's basketball match for the 2020-21 Pink Week to benefit the Vera Bradley Foundation. It is a part of a 10-day event that features a women's volleyball match (vs. Robert Morris, Feb. 15), women's basketball game (vs. Robert Morris, Feb. 19) and a women's soccer match (vs. Cleveland State, Feb. 24). There was also a live stream on Tuesday, February 16 with head coaches from each program and athletic director Kelley Hartley Hutton to recognize breast cancer survivors.
Today... Is Senior Day!
Saturday's game will be Senior Day for the two seniors on the Mastodon roster: Sierra Bell and Hannah Hess. Hess is a five-year player for the Mastodons, while Bell has been with the program for three seasons after spending two years at Northeast Community College.
The Series
This will be the first-ever meeting between Purdue Fort Wayne and Robert Morris. The fellow Horizon League newcomer is the only team in the League that Purdue Fort Wayne has never played.
A Look Forward to the Horizon League Tournament
The Horizon League Tournament will not have traditional seeding, as there is a formula to calculate seeds instead of just conference record. Coming into this weekend, Purdue Fort Wayne is the No. 10 seed and would play the No. 7 seed, which is Youngstown State at the moment.
A New High For Sellers
Shayla Sellers had a career-high 17 points against Cleveland State on Saturday, February 13. This surpassed her previous career-high of 15, which she had hit three times.
Her First Double-Double
Sierra Bell recorded her first double-double as a Mastodon on Friday, February 12. She scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. She is the second Mastodon to document a double-double this season, as Jaida Wolfork got one in the season opener.
Shayla's Impact on the Horizon
Shayla Sellers is fifth in the Horizon League in blocks with 20 this season, which is also fifth on a per game basis at 1.00.
Consistent Career-Highs
Freshman Aubrey Stupp had a pair of games at Youngstown State saw her set and match a career-high in her young career. She scored 11 points against the Penguins in Friday's game and then 11 again on Saturday.
Career-Highs for the Newcomers!
Freshman Rylie Parker and Eastern Kentucky transfer Valerie Clark both had career-highs against Wright State on Friday, January 29. Parker led the team with 13 points while Valerie Clark had 12, which came on four 3-pointers.
How Was Oakland's Shooting? Not Great Bob!
In Purdue Fort Wayne's second game against Oakland, the Mastodons held the Golden Grizzlies without a 3-pointer, forcing OU to go 0-for-10 from beyond the arc. This was the worst shooting performance by an opponent since Illinois went 0-for-21 against the 'Dons in 2014. This was the second time a team under Niecee Nelson has kept an opponent scoreless from 3-point range, the first team was the North Dakota Fighting Hawks in 2018, who went 0-for-7.
Ring the Bell
Sierra Bell had a career-high 21 points on January 16 against Green Bay, which surpassed her previous high as a Mastodon of 16 points, which came earlier this year at Evansville. She used a 7-of-16 shooting day with 4-of-11 from deep for her 21 points, while also recording four rebounds, three assists and a steal.
What's Up Shay?
Shayla Sellers had an impressive weekend stat line against Cleveland State to start 2021. In the two-game series, the sophomore had 27 points, nine rebounds, six assists, four steals and two blocks. Her 15 points on New Year's Day tied her career-high and her five assists in the second game were also a career-high.
Swipe, Swipe, Swipe it, Swipe
Shayla Sellers had five steals against Green Bay on January 15, which was the most for any Mastodon since she had eight herself on November 24, 2019.
Last Time Out
Purdue Fort Wayne fell to Cleveland State twice last week. Sierra Bell recorded her first double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds in Friday's game.
Coming Up
Purdue Fort Wayne's regular season will be over after the second game with Robert Morris and postseason will begin. Because of the Horizon League's formula, the Mastodons will not know their opponent until late Saturday night.
