Men's Volleyball Adds Four to 2021 Roster

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball head coach Ryan "Rock" Perrotte has announced the signing of four student-athletes for the 2021 season. Axel Melendez (Yauco, Puerto Rico, Ernesto Ramos Antonini), Zach Solomon (Muskego, Wis., Catholic Memorial High School), Gavin Owens (Wexford, Pa., North Allegheny Senior High School) and Davey Singer (Huntington Beach, Calif., Edison High School) will join the Mastodons in the fall of 2021.
Melendez (Outside Hitter - 6-9) has been a member of Ponce Pumas for the past five years. He also played for the San Juan Volleyball Club for two years and the Yauco Volleyball club for one year. Melendez is the son of Axel Melendez Sr. who played professional volleyball in Puerto Rico for 14 years and his mother, Lisette Watts, spent 13 years playing professional volleyball.
Solomon (Setter - 6-3) was named 2020 Conference Player of the Year and 2019 First Team All-Conference. During his time as a Crusader, he earned 2019 All-State Honorable Mention and made an appearance at the 2018 State Semifinals. In 2018, Solomon helped lead Catholic Memorial to a conference title and then again in 2020. Solomon earned 1,832 assists, 179 kills, 152 aces, 264 digs and 82 blocks as a Crusader.
Owens (Outside Hitter - 6-3) was a back-to-back state champion and was a scholar athlete all four years of high school. Not only did Owens play volleyball, but he played football, track and field and basketball as well. He played for the Pittsburgh Volleyball Club and was the 10th best team in the country in 2019.
Singer (Setter - 6-0) played with the United Volleyball Club and was selected for the 2019 Boys Junior National Championships All-Tournament team. While at Edison, he was a three-year letter winner and helped lead the Chargers to a 2019 league title and a 2020 Portula Tournament title. Singer was named team captain during his freshman, junior and senior years and named to the 2020 Tesoro All-Tournament team. Academically, the setter was on the honor roll and named an Edison High School Scholar Athlete.
