Mastodons Drop Second Match at Green Bay 3-2

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Despite career-highs from Madison Gates, Ramei Jackson and Sydney Boerst, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped a five-set heartbreaker to Green Bay (26-24, 18-25, 17-25, 25-20, 15-12) on Tuesday (March 2).
Gates had a career-high 66 assists with 14 digs for a double-double. Boerst had a career-best 23 kills with a .625 hitting percentage and Jackson notched her best of 17 kills with a .414 clip.
Katie Crowe also had a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs.
The Mastodons controlled the majority of the first set, even leading by as many as six at 17-11. Sydney got a kill to go up 24-21, but the Phoenix took the last five points of the set, holding off all the Mastodons' set point opportunities.
After a 9-9 start to the second set, the Mastodons went on a 5-1 run into the media timeout that was capped off with Rachael Crucis' ace. The Phoenix cut the Mastodon lead to three at 19-16, but Purdue Fort Wayne got three straight kills from Sidney Schiller to get the equalizer. Crucis had 10 of her match-high 24 digs in the second set.
Purdue Fort Wayne led 13-11 in the third set, then scored five in a row to go up 18-11. Julia Wayer got an ace and Boerst got three kills in this stretch. This run turned into a 9-1 push after four more points in a row for the 'Dons. Boerst had eight kills on eight swings in the third set alone.
Green Bay's offense clicked in the fourth, as the Phoenix hit .457 compared to the Mastodons' .346. Green Bay led wire-to-wire through the fourth. The 'Dons led 10-7 in the fifth set, but the Phoenix got four kills and an ace from Alexandra Zakutney down the stretch to win.
As a team, the Mastodons out-hit the Phoenix .297 to .242 and out-blocked them 10-8. They also had a 73-63 advantage in kills.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 8-4, 8-4 Horizon League while Green Bay improves to 4-8, 4-8. The Mastodons will hit the road for the final time in the regular season next week when they visit Oakland on Monday and Tuesday (March 8-9).
