ROCHESTER, Mich. - Behind 16 kills and 20 digs from Katie Crowe, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team defeated Oakland 3-1 (13-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21) in the O'Rena.
The Mastodons overcame a 25-13 first set which the Golden Grizzlies dominated, hitting .464 while holding the 'Dons to .061.
The script flipped entirely in the second set and beyond, as the 'Dons out-hit the Golden Grizzlies in the last three sets.
After falling down 3-0 in set two, the 'Dons went on a 4-0 push that saw two kills from Madelyn Wurster, one from Sidney Schiller and an ace from Rachael Crucis. Purdue Fort Wayne finished the set on a 5-1 run that was put in motion by a kill from Crowe and capped off with a kill from Wurster.
Oakland took a 10-6 advantage to start the third set, but after a Mastodon timeout and the two teams traded some points, the 'Dons rattled off an 8-2 run. This gave them a 17-15 lead. The Golden Grizzlies responded with a 4-1 stretch, but then Purdue Fort Wayne finished the set with a 7-2 run. Wurster got a solo block to finish things off.
In the fourth set, the 'Dons went on a 11-3 run to jump out to a 16-12 lead. Sydney Boerst got things moving with a kill. Oakland kept it close the rest of the way, bringing it to 23-21 one of Brittany Welch's 12 kills, but Crowe got a kill and forced an error to conclude the match.
Three 'Dons hit double-figures in kills: Crowe (16), Wurster (11) and Ramei Jackson (10). Defensively, Purdue Fort Wayne got double-digit digs from Crowe (20), Crucis (15), Madison Gates (15) and Schiller (10). Gates finished with a match-high 48 assists.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 9-4, 9-4 Horizon League while Oakland falls to 5-6, 5-6. These two teams will meet again tomorrow at 5 p.m.
