Mastodons Break 54-Hole Record, Anderson and Schroeder Finish Fifth

PROSPECT, Ky. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's golf 54-hole record set in the fall of 2019 only stood for one abbreviated season, as the Mastodons set a new record on Tuesday, March 23 at the Nevel Meade Collegiate. Emma Schroeder and Holly Anderson led the 'Dons, both finishing in a tie for fifth in the tournament.
As a team, the Mastodons finished in a tie for fourth, shooting 298-306-307 for a 911 54-hole score. This broke the previous record of 912 set at the Golfweek Program Championship on September 10, 2019.
In a tournament with seven of the nine Horizon League women's golf programs, the 'Dons only trailed Youngstown State and Oakland. YSU won the tournament with an 891 and Oakland took second with a 903. The Golden Grizzlies had the top individual finisher, as Amalia Shahzan shot a 217 (+1) to take medalist honors. Purdue Fort Wayne tied with IUPUI while finishing ahead of Cleveland State (928), UIC (949) and Northern Kentucky (973).
Anderson had her best round of the tournament on Tuesday, carding a 71 (-1) for a 74-78-71-223. She had five birdies on the day, including two in a row to start her round. She was 1-under-par on the front nine and even on the back. This the fifth top-10 finish of Anderson's career, but her first time cracking the top five.
Schroeder's round of 76 brought her total to 223 as well at 73-74-76-223. Her last round was highlighted by a birdie on 16 and 12 pars. Schroeder finished with the second-best average on par 4s in the field with a 4.03 average, while also recording the most pars in the field with 41. This was Schroeder's second top-five finish of her career.
Laura Caetano finished the tournament in a tie for 14th with a 76-76-78-230. In her last round, she birdied three holes on the back nine and parred eight on the front.
Anna Olafsdottir and Kennedy Brooker tied for the fourth spot for the team score, carding 75-83-82-240 and 80-78-82-240, respectively, which put them at 38th overall. Olasfdottir's last round featured nine pars, while Brooker's had six pars and two birdies on holes two and six.
Individually, Linnzie Richner (T29th) shot an 80-77-79-236, Arny Dagsdottir (52nd) shot 83-77-84-214, and Luiza Caetano (T65th) shot 83-82-90-255.
The Mastodons will have six days to prepare for chance to set a new record when they compete in the Colonel Classic on Monday, March 29. That tournament is hosted by Eastern Kentucky and will be played at the University Club at Arlington in Richmond, Kentucky.
