Women's Soccer Opens Regular Season With A Tie Against Toledo
8/19/2021 10:57:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team earned a 0-0 draw against Toledo on Thursday, Aug. 19 following a pair of overtime sessions at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
The result was the first victory or tie against a Mid-American Conference school since 2013 when the Mastodons defeated Ball State 1-0. It also snapped a four game losing streak against the Rockets.
The first half was an evenly played period with the Mastodons' best chance coming on a free kick following a yellow card on the Toledo goalkeeper that nearly resulted in a penalty kick.
Both teams found themselves with opportunities to score the game's first goal in the second half. With 14 minutes to go, Kayla Shebar would find Rylee Vruggink near the goal but Toledo defender McKenna Schultz would box out Vruggink from any attempt at taking a shot on net. With less than five minutes to go in the second half, Samantha Castaneda made a leaping save off an Ashton Cassel shot that deflected off the top of the crossbar. Seconds later, Toledo's Brooke Stonehouse attempted a shot that was high and wide of the net.
In the first overtime period, Shebar had an opportunity to score the game winning goal off a nice midfield pass from Gabrielle Fanning, but a leaping save by Toledo's goalkeeper Emma Boutorwick prevented the ball from going in the top of the goal. Toledo would get a shot off with a minute to go in the second overtime but Castaneda made another save at the bottom right of the net.
On the day, the Rockets outshot the 'Dons 15-9 and had an 8-4 shots on goal advantage. Zoe Greenhalge led the 'Dons in shots with three and one shot on goal. Shebar, Kelsey Gallagher, and Bella Reitano each put up a shot and a shot on goal as well.
The Homestead High School product Castaneda picked up the shutout in her first career start for the 'Dons.
The Mastodons will be back in action on Sunday, Aug. 22 (1 p.m.) against Morehead State at the Hefner Soccer Complex. The Eagles opened the season with a 2-0 victory over North Alabama on Thursday, Aug. 19.
