INDIANAPOLIS – The Horizon League announced on Monday (Aug. 30) Purdue Fort Wayne junior goalkeeper Samantha Castaneda was awarded the Nike Defensive Player of the Week honors.
The Fort Wayne native started in both games against Eastern Illinois and Bellarmine this weekend. She played in 220 minutes, racked up six total saves (three vs EIU, three vs Bellarmine), had one shutout vs EIU and allowed one goal vs Bellarmine. The Homestead High School graduate earned a 0-0-2 record in goal this weekend. In addition, her minutes played were the most in the Horizon League for a goalkeeper this weekend.
This is the first time a Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer student-athlete has won a Horizon League weekly honor since the 'Dons joined last season. In addition, this is the first player of the week honor for the Mastodons since Allyson Hayner won the Summit League Defensive player of the Week on Sept. 10, 2018.
Castaneda has played a big role in the start of the season for the Mastodons. She's started in all four games, has two shutouts and has allowed two goals in over 410 minutes in net. The Mastodons are unbeaten on the season at 1-0-3.
