9/3/2021 6:24:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped its opening match of the Discover Kalamazoo Classic with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-18) loss to Southeast Missouri on Friday, September 3.
The Mastodons and Redhawks both struggled to get their offenses rolling early on. SEMO hit .045 in the opening frame and was the better of the two squads. Ramei Jackson, Katie Crowe and Sidney Schiller each had two kills in the first set.
Maggie Castleman came alive in the second set, hammering down six of her eight swings. The 'Dons held close with the Redhawks early, trailing just 14-12 near the halfway mark. SEMO went on a 5-0 run from this point, however, sealing the set. Purdue Fort Wayne did hold off five set points thanks to kills from Castleman, Crowe and Viviana Lefherz.
The 'Dons went on a 4-0 spurt coming out of the break between sets two and three, but the Redhawks quickly dispelled the lead with a 5-0 run of their own. The two teams were tied as late as 11-all, but SEMO had a 5-1 stretch from which the 'Dons never bounced back.
Rachael Crucis had 14 digs to lead the match. Crowe had nine kills and eight digs.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 0-4, while Southeast Missouri improves to 4-1. The 'Dons will take the floor in University Arena again tomorrow, Saturday, September 4, to play Big Ten foe Indiana.
