Mastodons Top Detroit Mercy 62-60 For Third Straight Win

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Mastodons earned their fifth home win of the season on Thursday (Jan. 13) evening with a 62-60 victory over Detroit Mercy in Horizon League play.
The Mastodons' defense was on full display in the first 12 minutes, limiting Detroit Mercy to 2-of-21 shooting to start the game. It helped the 'Dons lead 28-24 at halftime. The Titans found their eye to start the second half and went up by as many as five points. Purdue Fort Wayne took the lead back with a 12-0 run over five minutes that saw the Titans miss seven shots from the field. When it was all done the 'Dons took a 53-46 advantage with 6:45 remaining.
The 'Dons made key plays down the stretch to put the game away. Ra Kpedi had an old fashion three-point play off an offensive board to put the 'Dons up 58-52 with 3:22 left. Up two with under a minute left, Jalon Pipkins took an inbounds pass and went right to the hoop. He was fouled and sunk two free throws to put the 'Dons ahead 60-56. The home team limited Detroit Mercy to 1-of-12 from three to close out the game.
The 'Dons kept Antoine Davis, the nation's second leading scorer at 23 points per game, in check with 17 points on 6-of-19 shooting. He was 3-of-11 from three.
The Titans as a team shot 36.5 percent (23-of-63). The Mastodons shot 38.9 percent (21-of-54).
Purdue Fort Wayne used balanced scoring to get the win, with six 'Dons scoring seven or more points. Damian Chong Qui led the team with 10 points. Kpedi finished with 10 rebounds to go with his nine points.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 8-7 (4-3 Horizon League) and hands the Titans their first league loss. The Titans are now 5-8 (3-1 Horizon).
The Mastodons are next in action on Saturday (Jan. 15) when Oakland comes to the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in a 1 p.m. tip.
