Jarred Godfrey Scores 25 But Oakland Takes Horizon League Game

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Despite 25 points from Jarred Godfrey, the Purdue Fort Wayne men's basketball team fell to Oakland 76-68 on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 15) in the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
Godfrey started the game 4-of-4 from the floor, all coming from behind the arc. He went on to convert a career-high seven 3-pointers. He finished with six rebounds and four assists to go with his 25 points. Godfrey is the first Mastodon to make seven 3-pointers in a game since Marcus DeBerry connected on seven against North Dakota on Jan. 31, 2000.
Purdue Fort Wayne took a 36-30 lead into halftime, recording an assist on all 11 first-half baskets. This carried over into the second half, as the 'Dons assisted on their first three makes after the break.
After going scoreless for 5:32, JoJo Peterson broke a Mastodon drought with a 3-pointer. Despite the 'Dons scoring drought, the defense was on lockdown, holding Oakland to just 1-of-9 over a four-minute stretch.
Oakland's leading scorer Jamal Cain fouled out with 11:52 left in the game, but still had 18 points in 18 minutes. Jalen Moore scored 24 to lead the Golden Grizzlies.
Oakland grabbed its first lead of the second half at 49-48 with 10:09 left, but Damian Chong Qui took the lead right back on the next possession. The Golden Grizzlies took the lead back at 52-50, a lead which they held onto until the final buzzer.
Chong Qui finished with a season-high seven assists and matched his season high with three steals.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 8-8, 4-4 Horizon League while Oakland improves to 13-4, and remains perfect in league play at 7-0. The Mastodons are back in action on Monday, January 17, when they step out of league play to welcome Michigan-Dearborn to the Gates Sports Center at 7 p.m.
