Audra Emmerson Sparks Huge Comeback to Beat Detroit Mercy

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Thanks to stellar play down the stretch from freshman guard Audra Emmerson, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team picked up their fourth Horizon League win on Saturday (Jan. 8) with a 62-57 victory over Detroit Mercy.
Emmerson, who was averaging 3.4 points per game prior to Saturday's contest, finished with a career-high of 17 points. She spurred the Mastodons to a 16-4 run over the final 3:33. The freshman buried two triples in this run: the first to start the run, the second to give the Mastodons their first lead since the 8:39 mark of the third quarter. After the Titans answered with a basket, Amellia Bromenschenkel knocked in the 3-pointer that gave the Mastodons the lead back for good. The sophomore played just 13 minutes, but was +16 in +/-.
Purdue Fort Wayne made five of their last six field goals and four of their last five 3-pointers.
The Mastodons led by as many as seven and Detroit Mercy by as many as 10. There were seven lead changes and six ties, with both teams leading for at least 15 minutes.
Riley Ott led the 'Dons to a fast start, jumping out to a 16-10 lead after the first quarter. She scored five of her seven points in the first quarter. Detroit Mercy closed this gap in the second quarter, taking a 30-30 stymie into the locker room. The Titans outscored the Mastodons 15-9 in the third quarter, but the 'Dons came roaring back with a 23-12 final frame.
Emmerson's 17 led the Mastodons' attack, with Sylare Starks also reaching double-digits. Starks is now 1-0 against her former squad at Detroit Mercy. The 'Dons were 9-of-11 from the charity stripe for 81.8 percent and 35.5 percent from the 3-point line.
Purdue Fort Wayne held Detroit Mercy without a 3-point make, which is the first time in over a decade that the Titans have gone with a 3-pointer in a game. It's the second time in as many season that the 'Dons have forced an opponent to be scoreless from beyond the arc.
With the win, the Mastodons earned their fourth Horizon League win, moving to 4-4 in the league, 5-10 overall. The 'Dons' four league wins is the most since the 2013-14 season.
Detroit Mercy falls to 0-14, 0-7, and will continue to look for its first win of the season. The Mastodons will travel to Milwaukee next week to play the Panthers on Friday (Jan. 14).
