‘Dons Rally For Five-Set Victory at Cleveland State

CLEVELAND – Purdue Fort Wayne picked up a 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 11-25, 26-24, 15-9) win at Cleveland State in Horizon League women's volleyball play on Friday (Oct. 14) evening.
The 'Dons recorded a season-high 91 digs in the match, 23 more than the 68 digs Cleveland State recorded.
Rachael Crucis had a season-high 27 digs. She moved into third all-time in program history in digs in the contest. She now owns 1,648 digs.
LonDynn Betts added a career-best 25 digs. Sidney Schiller finished with 15 digs to go with her 20 kills for a double-double. Taya Haffner added 11 digs with 55 assists to also pick up the double-double. Haffner's 55 assists matched her season best.
The 'Dons took the opening set with a 4-1 run to end the game. The 'Dons fell in the second and third sets and were close to never seeing a fifth set. But then things clicked late in the fourth set. First it was a 4-1 run that turned a 21-16 deficit to a 22-20 score. Schiller had the kill for point 20. The two teams traded points until it was 24-21 Cleveland State. The 'Dons turned away three straight match points to knot it at 24. The Mastodons only needed one set point, with a long rally going to the 'Dons for point 26 on a block by Molly Mirabelli and Taya Haffner.
Purdue Fort Wayne fell behind 2-0 and 5-4 in the fifth set. However, a five-straight Mastodon points followed for the 'Dons to go up 10-5. The 10th point was an ace by Alexandra Traciak.
The 'Dons out-hit the Vikings .200 to .185.
Cleveland State falls to 6-13 (3-5 Horizon League). The 'Dons improve to 6-13 (2-6 Horizon League). The 'Dons are at Oakland on Saturday.
