DETROIT - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team earned its second-consecutive berth to the Horizon League Championship after a 1-0 win at Detroit Mercy on Saturday (Oct. 22).
The Mastodons will have a chance at a Horizon League regular season championship with the final game of the season next Wednesday (Oct. 26). With a win at Cleveland State and a Milwaukee loss, the Mastodons would be sole owners of their first-ever league championship. A Mastodon win and a Milwaukee tie would result in co-champions.
It was a Zoe Greenhalge goal in the ninth minute that was the difference in the contest. She and Morgan Reitano broke away for a two-on-one situation deep in the attacking third. Greenhalge sent the pass from Retiano into the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.
The Mastodons nursed this lead for the rest of the match, keeping the Titans off the board for the duration. Samantha Castaneda led the way between the sticks, leading the 'Dons to their program-best eighth shutout of the season. It is their fifth in Horizon League play, which ties the most in the league. Castaneda had six saves against the Titans for her seventh clean sheet of the year.
Purdue Fort Wayne had a chance to extend the lead in the 83rd minute when Rylee Vruggink had a one-on-one with the keeper, but sent her shot wide right.
The Mastodons had five shots with four on-target.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 9-3-5, 5-1-3, while Detroit Mercy falls to 6-9-1, 4-5-0. The Mastodons will travel to Cleveland State for the last game of the Horizon League season on Wednesday (Oct. 26).
