10/8/2022 7:10:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team fell to Northern Kentucky 3-1 (25-23, 26-24, 16-25, 26-24) on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 8) on the Arnie Ball Court.
Rachael Crucis had seven of her match-high 20 digs in the first set, but NKU came away with the frame after a .250 hitting clip. The second set was closely contested as well, with eight ties and five lead changes. Iris Riegel had six of her kills in the second set.
The Mastodons held NKU to .000 hitting in the third set, dominating from wire-to-wire. The 'Dons never trailed, jumping up 12-2 to start.
Early in set four, Molly Mirabelli had a dig that turned into a kill. Unique as that is, it was made even more so by the fact that it was off her head. From this point on, the Mastodons went up by six at 16-10. Northern Kentucky went on an 11-2 run to take a 24-22 advantage. The 'Dons held off two match points to tie it at 24, but NKU took the final two points of the match.
With Crucis' 20 digs on Saturday, she is just two digs away from owning the third-most digs in Mastodon history. She has 1,621 to date. Sidney Schiller recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs. Riegel had a team-high 15 kills. Reilly Briggs had 17 to lead Northern Kentucky.
Purdue Fort Wayne moves to 5-13, 1-6 Horizon League. Northern Kentucky goes to 7-11, 5-2 Horizon. The Mastodons return to action on Friday (Oct. 14) at Cleveland State.
