Mastodons Defeat Panthers 81-71 For Seventh-Straight Win
2/20/2022 4:41:00 PM | Men's Basketball
MILWAUKEE – To put it simply. The Mastodons are hot. Purdue Fort Wayne won their seventh game in a row thanks to an 81-71 victory at Milwaukee on Sunday (Feb. 20) afternoon.
The 'Dons improve to 18-10 and 13-6 in the Horizon League. The 13 league wins are the most conference wins the Mastodons have won in a season as a Division I member, passing the 2015-16 team that went 12-4 in Summit League play. Only the 1992-93 team that went 15-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play picked up more league wins.
Milwaukee held a lead for only two minutes of the contest. Jalon Pipkins finished with 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting. He was one of five Mastodons in double-digits. Jarred Godfrey added 17. He now owns 1,537 career points, passing Mo Evans for fourth in program history in scoring.
Deonte Billups pitched in 13 points with four 3-pointers. Ra Kpedi had 12 points and seven rebounds including four on the offensive end. JoJo Peterson pitched in a career-high 11 points.
The 'Dons have already clinched a home game in the 2022 Horizon League Championship. The Mastodons will enter the final week of the regular season with games at Oakland and Detroit Mercy trying to earn a bye in the opening round. The 'Dons will either host an opening round game on March 1st at the Gates Sports Center or a quarterfinal contest on March 3rd at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum if they finish in the top four and earn a bye in the opening round.
The 'Dons had just one turnover in the first half on Sunday. They closed the half on a 7-2 run to lead 40-30 at half. The Mastodons would finish with just eight turnovers in the game.
Much like at Green Bay on Friday, Milwaukee never seriously threatened the Mastodons' lead in the second half. The closest they advanced was within six points just a minute into the second. Pipkins scored 16 points in the final 20 minutes. As a team, the 'Dons shot 61.5 percent (16-of-26) in the second half to ice the game.
The Mastodons were efficient from beyond the arc, shooting 11-of-24 for 45.8 percent in the game. They limited Milwaukee to 27.8 percent (5-of-18) shooting from three.
Tafari Simms led Milwaukee with 14 points. The Panthers fall to 9-20 (7-13 Horizon).
