FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team defeated the Goshen Maple Leafs on Monday night (Aug. 15) with a 2-0 clean sheet.
The Mastodons struck quickly, scoring the game-winning goal in the eighth minute. Rylee Vruggink charged into the box off a slow pass from Alyssa Weisbrodt and buried a roller into the back of the net.
The score remained 1-0 for the remainder of the first half, despite the Mastodons out-shooting the Maple Leafs 8-4 in the first 45.
The Mastodons put a security goal on the board in minute 46 when Mackenzie Evans rushed in from the right side to slide a worm-burner past three defenders to find Zoe Greenhalge for the goal.
Purdue Fort Wayne finished with a 19-6 advantage in shots, 7-1 in the on-target variety. Melina Kozachik had the only save for the Mastodons, combining with Belle Plautz for the shutout. Both keepers spent 45 minutes between the sticks.
After a 1-1 exhibition season, the Mastodons will open the regular season on Thursday, August 18 at 7 p.m. against Chicago State at the Hefner Soccer Complex. That matchup will be on ESPN+.
