Know Your Foes
• Canisius is coming off an 11-18 season. The Golden Griffins had a 10-8 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference record and a berth to the MAAC semifinal match. The Mastodons played two common opponents as Canisius last season: Wright State and Western Michigan. Canisius lost both of those matches 3-0. Under first-year head coach Tom Hanna, the Golden Griffins return three of their top seven hitters from last season.
• Lindenwood is in its first season of Division I competition in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Lions had a 14-13 record in 2021 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Head coach Will Condon is entering his sixth season at the helm and returns three of his top four attackers.
• Western Illinois had a 5-24 record last season, which included a 4-14 record in Summit League play. The one non-league game the Leathernecks won last season was against Eastern Kentucky. First-year head coach Dale Starr returns three of his top five, but neither of the two best attackers, from last season. The Leathernecks lost an exhibition 3-1 to Quincy to open 2022.
Series Histories
Purdue Fort Wayne has never played Canisius and Lindenwood, but has a storied history against Western Illinois. The Mastodons and Leathernecks were rivals in the Summit League for 12 years. The all-time series is 22-6 in favor of the Mastodons, including the 'Dons winning nine of the last 10 matches. The 'Dons have a 12-2 advantage in the Gates Sports Center.
Nearing 100
Head coach Steve Florio's next regular season win will be his 100th. He has won 99 matches since taking over the head coaching duties of the program in 2014.
Roster Reset
Purdue Fort Wayne will look to replace former Horizon League Player of the Year Katie Crowe in 2022. The Mastodons have four seniors, including two pin hitters, Madelyn Wurster and Sidney Schiller, and two liberos, Rachael Crucis and Alexandra Traciak. The four-member junior class includes three primary starters from last season: Maggie Castleman, Ramei Jackson and Molly Mirabelli. Three sophomores and six freshmen round out the roster for this season. Sophomore transfer Taya Haffner is expected to play a major role at the setter spot.
