8/26/2022 9:51:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Despite a furious comeback, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped its season opener against Canisius 3-2 (25-11, 25-19, 14-25, 13-25, 15-11) on the Arnie Ball Court. It was the nightcap of the first day of the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational presented by Sonesta Select.
Canisius came out with the hot hands in the first two sets, hitting over .340 in both frames.
After the break, the script flipped in favor of the Mastodons. The 'Dons hit .259 and .313 for the third and fourth sets while holding Canisius to .000 and -.033. In the third, the 'Dons used a 5-0 stretch behind the arm of freshman Iris Riegel to stretch the lead up to six. The lead ballooned up to eight after a 3-0 stretch that concluded with an ace from Sidney Schiller. Riegel's kill got another run started after that, as Purdue Fort Wayne had a 5-1 push at the end of the frame. Newcomer Taya Haffner aced the Golden Griffins to win the set.
The fourth set was all Mastodons from the get-go, as they jumped out to a 9-2 lead. The 'Dons had a 5-0 run that featured four straight kills and a block from Claire Pape. Purdue Fort Wayne got the lead up to as large as 12 after a 6-0 run to make it 23-11.
In the fifth, the pendulum swung back to Canisius. After starting down 4-2, the 'Dons got the lead back at 8-7 thanks to an ace from freshman LonDynn Betts. A 5-0 run from Canisius was the difference in the match, however. After going down 12-8, the 'Dons never got closer than two points.
Schiller finished with 15 kills to lead the team, while Riegel pitched in 11 in her collegiate debut. Betts had 17 digs in her first college match, while Rachael Crucis (12), Schiller (11) and Alexandra Traciak (10) joined her with double-digit digs.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 0-1. Canisius moved to 1-1 after falling to Lindenwood in the morning match of the tournament. The Mastodons will play Lindenwood at 11 a.m. and Western Illinois at 7 p.m. on Saturday (Aug. 27).
