'Dons Defeat Robert Morris 2-0 to Stay Unbeaten at Home
9/22/2022 9:48:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team used two second-half goals to beat Robert Morris 2-0 on Thursday (Sept. 22) at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
Hefner continues to be a safe haven for Mastodons, as the 'Dons move to 5-2-3 overall and 4-0-2 at home this season. The Mastodons also remain unbeaten in Horizon League action, improving to 1-0-1 with the win over the Colonials. The 5-2-3 mark is the best in Mastodon history through 10 games.
It wasn't until Kelsey Gallagher's goal in the 61st minute that the Mastodons broke up the tie with the Colonials. Gallagher received a feed from Mackenzie Evans and Zoe Greenhalge. Gallagher broke free of her defender and beat the RMU keeper one-on-one. It was her third goal of the season.
After the 'Dons opened up the scoring, RMU and Purdue Fort Wayne pushed each other's defenses as both keepers were forced to make plays for the remainder of the contest. After Gallagher's goal, Samantha Castaneda made two saves to keep her clean sheet alive. The Mastodons got the insurance goal they were seeking about 14 minutes after the home team went up 1-nil.
Freshman Lauren Klusek scored her first-career goal in minute 75, hammering home a loose ball in the box.
Purdue Fort Wayne finished with 11 shots, with seven on-target. The seven shots on goal came from seven different Mastodons.
Castaneda played all 90 minutes between the sticks to pick up her fourth shutout of the year. The 'Dons' four shutouts ties the second-most in a season in program history.
The Mastodons had 24 players see the field. Abby Klimkowski and Malia Velker saw their first action of the season.
Robert Morris falls to 5-2-3, 0-2-0 Horizon League. Purdue Fort Wayne will take its 5-2-3, 1-0-1 record on the road to face Horizon League preseason favorite Oakland on Sunday (Sept. 25) at 1 p.m.
