Home Sweet Hefner!
Purdue Fort Wayne is unbeaten at the Hefner Soccer Complex this season, sporting a 3-0-2 record at home. The Mastodons beat Chicago State (4-1), Ball State (1-0) and Southern Indiana (1-0), and tied Bellarmine (1-1) and IUPUI (2-2) in front of their home crowd.
Welcome Bobby Mo!
Robert Morris has not been to the Hefner Soccer Complex since joining the Horizon League in 2020. The Colonials' last trip to Fort Wayne was in 2017, which was a 4-2 win for the Mastodons.
Beating Buzzers
The Mastodons have had two results in the final minute this season. Purdue Fort Wayne got a penalty kick save from Samantha Castaneda in the final second of the Valparaiso game to win 1-0. Two games later, the 'Dons got a goal from Rylee Vurggink in the last two seconds of the IUPUI match to pull out a tie.
Spectacular Sam!
After leading the Mastodons to a 2-0 week against Valparaiso and Southern Indiana, Samantha Castaneda was showered with accolades. She was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week and was selected to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. It was her second Horizon League weekly honor and the program's first-ever representative on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. Her goalkeeping against the Beacons featured a saved penalty kick with no time on the clock to secure the win.
She's Been Around
Gabrielle Fanning is in her sixth year of college soccer, playing her first season in 2017. With a redshirt campaign in 2018 and the extra year due to the blanket COVID-19 waiver, Fanning is the only student-athlete at Purdue Fort Wayne of any sport to be playing her sixth year with the Mastodons. She is also the only current student-athlete to play under the "Fort Wayne" athletics branding, thus the only to play in blue and white uniforms. She has played in 72 games as a Mastodon, with 69 starts, and has a chance to become the all-time career leader in both categories.
I Like That!
Purdue Fort Wayne's 4-2-2 non-league record (.625) was the best winning percentage in non-league play in program history with at least two games played. The Mastodons were 1-0 in non-league in the shortened spring 2021 season.
Definitely Not Mid
This season was the first time since 2003 that the Mastodons have recorded two positive results against the Mid-American Conference. The 'Dons beat Ball State 1-0 and tied Toledo 1-1.
Last Time Out
The Mastodons squeaked out a tie with IUPUI thanks to Rylee Vruggink's goal with two seconds left in the contest. Zoe Greenhalge scored a PK in minute 60.
Coming Up
Purdue Fort Wayne will return home for a game against Milwaukee on October 1 at 1 p.m.
