MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped a five-set Horizon League match 3-2 (25-20, 25-19, 19-25, 22-25, 15-11) at Robert Morris on Friday (Sept. 30).
Sidney Schiller was the go-to option in set one, as she finished with five of her career-high 22 kills in the first. Molly Mirabelli had four kills as the second attacking arm. Both Schiller and Mirabelli hit at least .400 in the opening set.
Purdue Fort Wayne burned both of its timeouts early in set two when Robert Morris took an early lead. Iris Riegel started a push when she recorded two of her five kills in a 5-1 stretch to bring the 'Dons back within three. The 'Dons got within two when Taya Haffner got a kill, but this was as close as they got.
The Mastodons went up 14-5 in set three to earn a comfortable lead. Alexandra Traciak had two aces in her serving rotation, then Schiller had one in the next to help solidify the advantage. RMU closed the gap to four, but Riegel got the kill to close the frame.
Ramei Jackson was the one Mastodon the Colonials could not stop in set four. She had seven kills on 11 swings, leading Purdue Fort Wayne to a hitting percentage of .421 in the frame. After a timeout, the 'Dons scored two in a row to go up 21-20 and force RMU to call timeout. After a timeout of their own, the Mastodons took the last two points of the set with kills from Hafffner and Mirabelli.
After an ace from Haffner to start the final frame, RMU jumped up 5-2 and never trailed again. The Mastodons turned away three set points with a kill from Riegel, a block from Jackson and Jena Medearis, and another kill from Schiller. RMU's timeout stole the momentum and the 'Dons dropped the match.
Schiller's career-high 22 kills and 15 digs were both match-highs. Riegel had 15 and Jackson had 13. Haffner had 52 assists, eight digs and four kills. Rachael Crucis and LonDynn Betts joined Schiller with double-digit digs.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 5-10, 1-3 Horizon League, while Robert Morris improves to 8-9, 1-4. The Mastodons will take the floor again on Saturday (Oct. 1) at Youngstown State at 4 p.m.
