Purdue Fort Wayne WVB Drops League Match at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team fell to the Youngstown State Penguins on Saturday (Oct. 1) 25-22, 25-20, 27-25 in the Beeghly Center.
Freshman Iris Riegel led the 'Dons with 10 kills. Rachael Crucis had a team-high 14 digs.
After four-straight points for Purdue Fort Wayne to tie the first set at 10, YSU went on a 4-1 stretch. The Penguins led 19-15 before the Mastodons went on a 4-0 run of their own to tie up the set. The 'Dons led 21-20 after a kill from Riegel, but YSU took five of the last six.
Youngstown State started the second set up 10-3 and never trailed again. The 'Dons closed the gap to two after five-straight late in the frame, but YSU was clutch down the stretch again to take a 2-0 lead.
The third and final set was back and forth, with the Mastodons eventually leading 23-21, but Youngstown State went on to score on six of the last eight points of the match.
Paula Gursching led the match with 20 kills and a .432 hitting percentage.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 5-11, 1-4 Horizon League, while Youngstown State improves to 7-10, 1-5. The Mastodons return home for a game on Friday (Oct. 7) for the annual Pink Out match against Wright State.
