Men's Golf Shoots Second-Best Round in Program History

WESTLAKE, Ohio - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf team's opening round of 275 at the Tom Tontimonia Invitational on Monday (Oct. 2) was the second-best 18-hole round in program history.
Nine of the 10 Horizon League men's golf programs were at the event. The Mastodons are tied for second among them, just one shot behind Oakland and tied with IUPUI.
Kasey Lilly and Nick Holder were both among the best in the field through two rounds, both shooting 139 to tie for 10th place. Lilly was steadier throughout the round, while Holder had a phenomenal stretch of golf in the morning round. After starting with four pars, Holder then had a stretch of seven birdies over the next nine holes to move to 6-under. He finished the round by matching his career-best of 67. In the afternoon round, he got birdies to fall on holes five and nine to pair with his 14 pars for the two-round score of 67-72-139.
Lilly had four birdies in the morning round while only recording one bogey. His birdies came on holes seven, eight, 13 and 15, the last of which was his starting hole. He was bogey-free on the back nine in round one. After a bogey to start round two, he responded with two birdies in a row. He was never over par again. He birdied holes seven and nine, finishing the day with a score of 68-71-139.
Burke Pitz had his score taken in both rounds, shooting 69-73-142. He was consistent in round one, turning in just one bogey. He was bogey-free on the front nine with a pair of birdies on eight and nine. He finished his round with a birdie on 15. In the afternoon, Pitz had birdies on eight and 15 and had 12 pars. He is tied for 24th.
Freshman Nick Bellush's score was used in the morning. He shot 71-74-145 to tie for 42nd with 18 to play. He started both rounds by birdieing hole 17. In the morning, he added birdies on holes one, seven and 13. In the afternoon, he birdied one and 14.
Hunter Mefford was one shot back of Bellush to tie for 51st with a 73-73-146. He had birdies on holes three, five, nine and 11 in his pass through the course. In round two, he had just one birdie on his starting hole (15), but had just three bogeys to balance it out.
AJ Agnew played as an individual, shooting an even 71-71-142.
The Mastodons' 275 was the best team round in the tournament. Overall, the 'Dons are in a tie for fourth place at 564. Butler leads the pack with a 36-hole team score of 554.
The final round of the Tom Tontimonia Invitational will tee off at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (Oct. 3).
