FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball had the best player on the floor on Saturday evening (Oct. 7), defeating Robert Morris 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-16) behind 20 kills from Panna Ratkai.
The Mastodons' offense was impressive on their home floor, as they hit over .300 in each set. The opening frame was the best, clocking in at .531 with just one error. The 'Dons finished the match with a .419 hitting clip, their highest in a match since 2012.
Ratkai was the Colonials' kryptonite all evening. She had nine kills in the first set on 12 attempts without an error, four kills on eight errorless swings in set two, then seven kills on 15 attacks in set three. On the other side of the ball, Kennedy McCants was a threat to RMU's attack. She finished with eight blocks, the ninth-most by a Mastodon in a three-set match in program history.
The Mastodons used a 6-1 run late in the opening set to take a 21-12 lead. The Mastodons had two of their 12 blocks in this stretch, one from Abby Stratford and Maggie Castleman and one from McCants. The 'Dons weathered a 4-0 run from RMU and found Ratkai for two kills in the final three points of the set.
After the Colonials led 5-3, Purdue Fort Wayne went on a 8-0 run behind Ratkai's service. She had a pair of her four aces in this run. The Mastodons did not let up after this point, they had an 8-1 run to go up 19-7. The 'Dons comfortably took the second set when Stratford had one of her five kills on set point.
The two teams were tied 11-11 in set three, but the 'Dons rattled off eight more in a row behind Ashby Willis' serve. She had an ace midway through, and Joanna Larsen and McCants combined for two blocks. This put the set out of reach for the visitors, who were sent back to Moon Township without winning a set.
Ratkai was the only player in the match to record double-digit kills, finishing with 20 on an efficient .514 hitting percentage. She also added four aces and eight digs.
