Birthday Boy Shoots 1-Under in Final Round of Bellarmine Event

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - On his birthday, Purdue Fort Wayne men's golfer Hunter Mefford shot a 1-under 71 in the final round of the Mickey Mouse Intercollegiate on Tuesday (Feb. 21).
Mefford's 71 was the seventh-best in the 91-player field on Tuesday. He started his round with a birdie on the opening hole, then had back-to-back birdies on seven and eight to shoot even on the front. On the back, he had birdies on 12 and 15, then a bogey on 18 to shoot 35 on the back. His 74-74-71-219 put him in a tie with teammate Kasey Lilly for the team's best score and the 17th position in the field.
Lilly shot a 75 to finish his round at 219 as well. He had a seven-hole stretch of pars on the front nine, then had two birdies on the back nine. He was even after making the turn.
Nick Holder was four shots back of Mefford and Lilly, turning in a 223 after a third round of 77. He tied for 35th He had birdies on 12 and 15, which was in a stretch of 11-straight bogey-free holes from hole five to hole 15. Burke Pitz was two shots back of Holder with a 225, but had a one-stroke lead on Holder on Tuesday. Pitz birdied one and three to start his day, then found two more birdies to fall on seven and 15. He had seven holes in a row on the back nine without a bogey.
Jadden Ousley also started his round with a birdie on one, shooting an 80 to record a three-day total of 238.
The Mastodons tied with St. Thomas with a team score of 886. Matthew Larkin of Wofford led his team to a trophy with a team score of 852. Larkin was the medalist with a 205.
The Mastodons will return to Florida on March 6 to play in the Daytona Beach Spring Invitational. That event is hosted by Stetson.
