FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's basketball program has added Valparaiso transfer Maximus Nelson (Appleton, Wis. / Appleton North HS / Valparaiso).
Nelson (6-8, 215) played in 31 of Valpo's 32 games last season with 22 starts as a freshman. He averaged 4.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. The Appleton, Wisconsin native shot 34.2 percent (38-of-111) from three. He scored a season-high 18 points including six 3-pointers on Feb. 4 vs. Drake. In high school he had a 44-point performance in the Wisconsin state playoffs during his junior season, establishing a career high and hitting the game-tying shot to send it to overtime. Nelson played for Wisconsin Playground AAU.
"We are excited to add Maximus to our already talented recruiting class," Mastodon head coach Jon Coffman said. "He is an ideal fit into our style of play and really stretches the floor like some of our past big wings—Bobby Planutis, Matt Holba, Joe Edwards and DeAngelo Stewart! He is an experienced, tough, physical, skilled and versatile forward. He can guard multiple positions, has a great basketball IQ and can really, really shoot the basketball. He brings great experience having logged 22 starts during a productive freshman year in the Missouri Valley Conference."
Nelson joins a group of newcomers for 2023-24 that also features Jalen Jackson (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Northrop High School / UIC), Rasheed Bello (Chicago, Ill. / DePaul Prep / UW-Parkside), Khoi Thurmon (Akron, Ohio / Buchtel HS), CJ Hadnot (Houston, Texas / Cypress Creek HS) and Jermaine Coleman (Indianapolis, Ind. / Park Tudor HS).
