Bello Named to Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch List

BOSTON - Purdue Fort Wayne guard Rasheed Bello has been named to the Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch List, announced today by College Insider and LouHenson.com on Wednesday (Dec. 10).
The Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award is given annually to the top mid-major player in Division I college basketball. Among the 40 players in the mid-season list includes three Horizon League players. Along with Bello, Marques Warrick from Northern Kentucky and Trey Townsend from Oakland appear on the list.
Bello had an immediate impact in his first season with the Mastodons, earning the Horizon League Player of the Week Award on Nov. 13 after averaging 20.3 points per game, 3.7 assists per game, 1.7 steals per game. He led the team to three wins that week, including a season opening win over DePaul. The following week Bello was awarded Arizona Tip-Off All-Tournament Team after leading the 'Dons to a championship win.
Bello is currently 19th in the nation in total steals (35) and his average of 2.8 steals per game in Horizon League games places him first in the league. In a win against Northern Kentucky (Dec. 29), Bello had seven steals which tied the program's Division I era record for steals in a game.
Bello ranks seventh in the Horizon League in points per game (15.6), third in assists per game (4.1), sixth in assist to turnover ratio (1.7) and fourth in free throw percentage (79.2 percent). He scored his 1,000th point in his NCAA career in a win against Detroit Mercy (Dec. 31).
The award honors former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach Lou Henson who won 775 games in 41 seasons and is the winningest coach in Illinois basketball history with 423 victories. The recipient of the annual award is determined by a 10-member voting committee, which consists of current and former head coaches, as well as two senior staff members of CollegeInsider.com. The 2024 award will be announced in Phoenix, Ariz., site of the men's Division I Basketball Championship.
