Mastodons Clinch No. 5 Seed With 3-1 Win Over YSU on Senior Day

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team clinched the No. 5 seed for the upcoming Horizon League Championship on Saturday (Nov. 16) with a 3-1 win (25-19, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19) on Senior Day.
The Mastodons will move on to the Horizon League Championship for the first time since the spring 2021 season. They will play No. 4 seed Green Bay on Friday (Nov. 22) at 6 p.m. in Dayton, Ohio.
Prior to Saturday's contest, the Mastodons celebrated the careers of Nicole Jones, Taya Haffner and Abby Stratford. Shortly into the match, Jones dished out the 1,000th assist of her career. Haffner had 28 assists and 11 digs for a double-double and Stratford had five kills and a block.
Outside of the senior celebration, Panna Ratkai led the Mastodons with a monster effort of 23 kills and 13 digs while hitting .320. She had six kills in the first set, eight in the second, four in the third and five error-less in the fourth.
After going behind 4-0 in set one, the Mastodons rattled off five in a row and never trailed again. The 'Dons led 18-17 after a 3-0 push from YSU, but then went on a 5-0 run of their own to put the set away.
There were 11 ties and three lead changes in the second set. The 'Dons led 22-20 late, but YSU earned five kills in the last eight points to even the match.
Another quick YSU start in the third put the 'Dons down 5-2, but Mya Plemons had back-to-back aces to tie it up. Later on, YSU led 18-16, but the Mastodons mounted a 7-1 run that saw Ratkai and Iris Riegel register two kills each. Becky Barrett had the ace to seal the set.
The Mastodons never trailed in set four. They jumped out to an 8-2 lead after a kill from Riley Rosneck. The Penguins cut it to one, then two again later, but the 'Dons used a 6-2 run to close the match. The Mastodons hit a scorching .400 as a team in the fourth, totaling .262 for the match.
Riegel finished with 10 kills. LonDynn Betts had 20 digs, followed by 13 from Ratkai and 11 from Haffner.
Purdue Fort Wayne improved to 17-14 and 10-8 in the Horizon League. Both marks tie or best season totals since 2019. Youngstown State fell to 9-21, 3-15.
