HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf finished as the runner-up of the Horizon League Championship on Monday (April 22) with a team score of 874.
In his final collegiate outing, Kasey Lilly led the Mastodons with a third-place finish. He was one shot shy of joining the top two players in a playoff for the individual title. He started his day with a birdie on hole one, then rattled off four pars in a row. After two bogeys, he parred six more in a row. He reached the 518-yard 14th in two, and barely missed his eagle putt, setting up for a tap-in birdie. Two holes later, he birdied 16 thanks to a mid-range putt. On 17, he got onto the green from directly behind a tree on his approach and two-putted for par. On 18, he crushed his drive and put a pitch to short range, but barely missed the birdie putt that would've put him in the playoff.
Lilly was named to the All-Tournament Team for his third-place performance.
Lilly finishes his historic career as the program's all-time leader in nearly every category.
As a team, Purdue Fort Wayne's 874 would have won last year's championship aside from the Mastodons' 2023 title team. Wright State shot 856 as a team and had the individual medalist Andrew Flynn win in a playoff with fellow Raider Timmy Hollenbeck.
In his first collegiate league championship, Brock Reschly tied for 12th with a 222. His final round of 77 was bogey-free on the front nine and included a birdie on the opening hole. He had three more pars on the back and birdied 14.
On the opposite end of his collegiate career, Hunter Mefford tied for 17th with a three-day score of 225. His final round of 75 featured four birdies. They came on holes one, three, 12 and 14. He added seven pars. This included a great par save on 10, where he went into the water on his tee shot and into the bunker on his second. He got up-and-down from there to save par. Mefford leaves Purdue Fort Wayne with the third-best career scoring average in program history.
Burke Pitz also leaves the Mastodon program as a top-10 all-time player. He tied with Mefford and Nick Holder for 17th after a final round of 78. Pitz had a birdie to start the back nine on a par-5 that runs along a large pond. He also birdied the 14th, another par-5 with water along the right side. Pitz had 10 pars as well.
Holder joined Mefford and Pitz in 17th after finishing with his best round of 71. He was bogey-free on the back nine with birdies on 10, 13 and 18. He also had a birdie to start his round. The redshirt-sophomore added 11 pars to finish his season on a high note.
Purdue Fort Wayne's average of 290.1 this season stands as the single-best in program history.
