YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer fell short in a 3-1 loss to Youngstown State on Sunday (Sept. 29) afternoon.
The Penguins controlled the pace of the first half, playing aggressively and keeping the ball in the Mastodon half. Youngstown State's Emma Rigone found the net in the eighth minute on a header. The Mastodons earned their best chance in the first half in the 28th minute as Audriana Rhyner attempted a cross-field equalizer that ended up sailing just wide of the top corner of the net. The Penguins extended their lead in the final five minutes of the half after capitalizing on a free kick that resulted in a Chloe Weiland header.
Purdue Fort Wayne turned up the pressure when they returned from the locker room and Zoe Greenhalge attempted an early shot from outside the box that nearly missed the top left corner of the goal. In the 65th minute the Mastodons entered the scoring column. Sophomore Emersyn Geik scored her first collegiate goal on a header, assisted from a Gigi Ricciardi corner kick.
Youngstown State added to their score once more in the 69th minute in a similar fashion as the Mastodon goal. Chloe Weiland scored on a header that was sent from the corner kick.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 6-5-1 (1-2-0 Horizon League). Youngstown State advances to 3-7-2 (1-3-0 Horizon League). The Mastodons will return home and host Oakland for a doubleheader on Saturday (Oct. 5) at 4 p.m. following the men's game.
