SDSU Moves Past Mastodons in Summit League Rivalry Revival

MACOMB, Ill. - Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball fell to South Dakota State 3-1 (24-26, 25-19, 25-20, 25-22) on Saturday (Sept. 7) in the final match of the Leatherneck Classic.
The Mastodons took set one despite falling behind 4-0 early on. The 'Dons had a 4-0 run to go up 13-12 thanks to two kills from Panna Ratkai, and a block and kill by Mya Plemons. SDSU went up 21-19, but Riley Rosneck started a 5-1 push with a kill. The 'Dons held SDSU to .157 hitting in the first set. Ratkai and Abby Stratford led the 'Dons with six and five kills, respectively. LonDynn Betts had 12 of her match-high 26 digs in the opening set.
Purdue Fort Wayne led 17-16 in set two, but the Jackrabbits went on a 9-2 run over the final 11 points of the set to even the match. Ratkai had six more of her match-high 20 kills in the second set.
Similarly in the third set, the 'Dons were even with the Jackrabbits at 15, but SDSU strung together a 6-1 stretch to keep the Mastodons at arm's reach. SDSU took the third set despite the 'Dons hitting a respectable .361 as a team.
South Dakota State went up 10-3 over the 'Dons to start four and never gave up the lead. The Mastodons had a 5-0 run behind Ratkai's serve, but never closed the gap to less than one at 23-22.
Ratkai finished with 20 kills for the fourth time in the six matches this season.
Purdue Fort Wayne moves to 3-3 while South Dakota State remains unbeaten at 6-0. The 'Dons will turn their attention to the Popcorn Classic next week, where they will play Cornell, Miami (OH) and the host Valparaiso Beacons.
