Mastodon Volleyball Picks Up Win Over Cornell at Popcorn Classic

VALPARAISO, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball split its opening day at the Popcorn Classic on Friday (Sept. 13), picking up a five-set win over Cornell before falling to Miami (OH) in the evening.
Purdue Fort Wayne 3, Cornell 2
The Mastodons went the distance against Cornell after going up 2-0, hanging on for the five-set win 25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 20-25, 15-11.
Three Mastodons recorded double-digit kill performances. Panna Ratkai had 23, Abby Stratford had 14 and Riley Rosneck had 10. LonDynn Betts was a threat in multiple ways from the libero spot, notching 19 digs, six assists and four aces. Taya Haffner and Nicole Jones split the setting duties, dishing out 36 and 15 assists, respectively.
The Mastodons took set one thanks to a 6-0 run that put them ahead for good. Ratkai's service included an ace in this stretch. She had one of her match-high 23 kills on set point.
Set two was similarly tight like set one until the 'Dons had an 8-1 run that included three aces in four tries from Betts. Stratford got the set-winning kill in the second, one of her seven in the frame.
Cornell had a 7-1 run in set three that gave the Big Red a cushion until the 'Dons evened it back up at 18. The Big Red were able to capitalize on late kills to extend the match. Set four saw Cornell jump out to a 12-6 lead that never tilted the other way.
The fifth set was close until a 10-9 edge for the 'Dons. After that, Stratford got a kill, then Jena Medearis and Rosneck combined for a block. Betts' ace put the 'Dons up 13-9 and within striking distance of match point. Rosneck got the first match-winning kill of her career to move the Mastodons to 4-3.
Cornell fell to 2-2.
Miami (OH) 3, Purdue Fort Wayne 0
Purdue Fort Wayne overcame deficits in each of the three sets, but fell to Miami 27-25, 25-20, 25-22.
Miami jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in set one and carried the lead until the 20-16 mark. Ratkai got a kill to move back to the service line, then had two aces in a row. This spurred a 7-1 run that put the 'Dons up 23-21. The 'Dons had a duo of set points, but had two attack errors that led into a 5-1 run for Miami to win the opening frame.
Miami went up 12-7 in the second, but the 'Dons got it back within one at 16-15 after a kill from Iris Riegel. The RedHawks rattled off a 4-0 run to push it back out, then traded points with the 'Dons the rest of the way.
After trailing 13-5, the Mastodons clawed back, eventually tying the third set at 20 after a 4-0 run behind Jones' serve. Miami earned each of its five points from there will four kills and a block to take the match.
Ratkai finished with a match-high 16 kills and 15 digs for a double-double. Betts had 17 digs, also a match-high.
Purdue Fort Wayne moved to 4-4 with the split. Miami improved to 5-3.
The Mastodons are back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 14) against Valparaiso.
