ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team fell to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-23) on Friday night (Oct. 10).
Riley Rosneck was the star of the opening set, registering eight of her 14 kills in the first alone. It took her just 15 swings to do it. After a 15-all draw, Oakland rattled off a 6-1 run that put the Mastodons behind the proverbial eight-ball.
The second set was tightly contested early until a 15-14 lead from Oakland, after which the Golden Grizzlies had a 4-0 run to take control of the set. Mya Plemons was great in the second offensively, finishing with five kills on seven attempts.
Oakland controlled the majority of the final frame, never trailing. OU had a 13-6 lead before the Mastodons later used an 8-3 run to get within one, forcing two timeouts along the way. Haiden Means had an ace to finish this run. By then, however, Oakland had reached set point, of which the Golden Grizzlies capitalized with a kill from Ella Schomer.
Anika Prisby had 11 kills for OU, but the Mastodons had three in double-figures: Rosneck (14), Medearis (11) and Plemons (10). Plemons did so without an error on her 17 swings for a .588 hitting percentage.
Means dished out a respectable 31 assists and had nine digs. Becky Barrett had 18 digs, while Meg Berkland had 11.
Purdue Fort Wayne fell to 3-14, 1-5 Horizon League while Oakland improved to 4-14, 4-2. The Mastodons and Golden Grizzlies will square off again on Saturday (Oct. 11) at 2 p.m.
