Mastodons Drop Four-Setter at Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped a four-set match, 3-1 (17-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-11), at Oakland on Saturday (Oct. 11).
The Mastodons opened the match with the lead, jumping out to 11-7 on a 5-1 run. The 'Dons went on to reach the media break first, owning a 15-11 lead. Purdue Fort Wayne jumped out to a nine-point lead at 21-12 following six unanswered points from the 'Dons. The Mastodons held the Golden Grizzlies to a .088 hitting percentage on the path to a 25-17 first-set win.
The momentum switched in the match following the first set. Oakland sprung out to a 7-1 lead at the start of the second set, which the Golden Grizzlies followed-up with a 5-0 run own a 12-2 lead. After battling through the remainder of the second, Oakland capped off the set with a 7-2 run. Purdue Fort Wayne was held to a .034 hitting percentage in the 25-15 second set loss.
The Golden Grizzles continued to pounce in the third set, holding the Mastodons to a .000 hitting percentage. Oakland jumped out to a 9-2 lead following seven unanswered points from the Golden Grizzlies. Oakland cemented their lead with another 7-2 run, taking a 10 point lead (16-6). The Mastodons couldn't close the gap before dropping the third set 25-13.
Oakland sprung a 4-0 run to open the fourth, and final, set of the match. The opening run was just the beginning of the Golden Grizzlies' offensive showing to cap off the match, owning a 12-1 run for a lead at 18-7. Oakland closed out the match with their third large run of the set, this time 7-1, for a 25-11 fourth-set finish. The Golden Grizzlies hit .458 in the final set, holding the 'Dons to .000.
Haiden Means led the Mastodons with 22 assists in the match. Miona Dimitric and Riley Rosneck each finished with a team-leading eight kills in the contest. Becky Barrett notched 12 digs on the day.
