FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team recognized three seniors on the Mastodons' Senior Day on Saturday (Nov. 8): Iris Riegel, Jena Medearis and manager Ashtyn Zickgraf.
The Mastodons fell to Wright State 3-1 (20-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-15). On a day dedicated to the seniors, it was the underclassmen that stood out in the contest. Freshman Trinity Rye had a career-high 20 kills on a .375 hitting percentage and sophomore Riley Rosneck had 13 kills of her own.
The Mastodons won set one despite falling behind 12-4 early. Rye helped the Mastodons mount a huge comeback, eventually taking a 17-16 lead. After WSU went up 18-17 on two kills from Mya Ayro, the Mastodons earned six points in a row, including two kills and an ace from Rosneck. From there, Rye and Medearis each got a kill to take set one.
After the Mastodons hit .344 in set one, the offense waned and slowed to sub-.200 the rest of the match while Wright State bumped up above .250. The 'Dons gave up a 7-1 run in set two and an 8-2 run in set three, allowing Wright State to gain control of the match. The fourth set featured a 9-1 Raider run to go up 10. Despite a 4-1 run late, the Mastodons were unable to rekindle the spark from set one to mount a comeback.
Lili Smith and Haiden Means dished out 25 and 20 assists, respectively. Means added 14 digs for a double-double. Becky Barrett had 31 digs, matching her career-high.
Purdue Fort Wayne fell to 3-24, 1-15 in the Horizon League. Wright State improved to 17-10, 11-5. The Mastodons will head to Youngstown State next week for the season's final two matches.
