CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Olivia Jang of the Purdue Fort Wayne women's golf team earned the second runner-up finish of her career at the Islander Classic on Tuesday (Feb. 18) after a final round of 77.
Needing to make up two shots to move into second, Jang's 77 moved her into a three-way tie for second. She finished the week with a 75-72-77-224, just one shot shy of a top-10 54-hole mark in program history. In her final round of the week, Jang started with four pars. Then after two bogeys, she rattled off eight more pars in the next nine holes. Two bogeys on holes two and three threatened to push her out of the top five, but Jang birdied her last hole of the tournament, a 128-yard par-3. Tuesday's runner-up is the fourth top-five finish of Jang's career and her fifth top-10.
Natalie Papa moved up eight spots in the standings after a solid round of 74. Her 81-76-74-231 was good enough to tie for 10th place, solidifying her third top-10 of the season. Her third round of the week was very clean, as she finished with 16 pars and two bogeys. She started with seven pars in a row and ended with seven in a row.
In 17th place, Hunar Mittal turned in a 78-77-78-233. On Tuesday, her round was highlighted by a birdie on hole 11 and a stretch of six pars in a row to wrap up the round.
Seven shots back of Mittal, Lillian Gottman tied for 28th with an 82-80-78-240. Gottman moved up five spots in the final round after turning in 12 pars and a birdie. The birdie came on hole two, the 459-yard par-5.
Lara Dommach was one shot behind Gottman and also moved up on the leaderboard with a final round of 79. Dommach had just one hole worse than a bogey but found two birdies elsewhere on the course to make up for them. She had six pars in her first eight holes, then got birdies to fall on holes 18 and two. Her 82-80-79-241 was good for 30th place.
As a team, the Mastodons finished fifth with a 316-305-307-928. The host, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, won the event with a team score of 900. Islander Samantha Gibbs won the event with a 218.
The Mastodons will play next on March 8-9 in Vero Beach, Florida at the NKU Spring Fling.
