WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After 36 holes of action on Monday (Oct. 12), Justin HIcks of the Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf team has a chance at an individual trophy at the Purdue Fall Invitational.
In the unique play six, take five format, the field had its depth tested. Hicks rose to the occasion, shooting 70-71-141. He was remarkably steady in the morning round, firing a bogey-free 70 with birdies on three and seven. In the afternoon round, it looked like he was doing the same with back-to-back birdies to start. After bogeys on 17 and 18, he went 4-under over the next seven holes thanks to birdies on one and four and an eagle on the 290-yard par-4 seventh hole. That hole features a double-fairway with a short approach in normally, but it was moved up 75 yards in the second round. Hicks took advantage, reaching the green off the tee. With 18 holes to play, Hicks is in fifth place, three shots off the lead.
Nick Bellush shot 74-75-149 for 33rd place. The junior had three birdies and 11 pars in round one, with the former coming on holes one, 10 and 13. In round two, he birdied hole 16, which set him up for a 1-under start over his first eight holes. He also added birdies on holes seven and 13.
Two strokes back of Bellush, Julian Dugan shot 77-74-151 for 43rd. He managed four pars in a row to start his day, eventually finding a birdie on the 534-yard fourth. In round two, he birdied holes 15, one and seven, then ended his day with three pars in a row.
Brock Reschly strung together a 75-77-152 for 48th place. He birdied hole eight in the morning round, setting up an even front nine with pars on the first seven holes. Reschly's afternoon round had birdies on holes three, seven and 15.
Gavin Hare shot 79-74-153, good for 53rd place. His morning round featured a birdie on hole one, a 392-yard par-4. In the afternoon, he dropped in three birdies on holes 16, seven and nine, the first of which was the longest on the course at 608 yards. He was bogey-free on the front nine for a 2-under 34.
AJ Agnew shot 78-77-155 and is in 69th place. He birdies holes 18 and six in the morning before parring his last five of the round. Later in the day, he birdied three and seven, then once again parred his last five.
Brady Moore played as an individual, shooting 73-76-149 for 33rd place.
